This piece started out as a compositional exercise for A level students. I wanted to show how different moods and styles can be created from a melody, so I chose the famous Chorale ‘Ein Fest burg’ by J.S Bach for the exercise.
I wanted to show the passage of time, so I used clock chimes in the initial playing of the theme and developed these using motivic development and augmentation.
The musical journey continues to create interesting and contrasting ideas by using many traditional composition techniques, but within more modern genres.
The second section uses a very simple 3 note fanfare style motif, heralding a dissonant and tense chase theme.
Finally, in contrast the music moves into a Jazz Waltz to explore the possibilities of this triple time feel.
The piece ends in reflective mood in a similar vein to the opening. I have extended the final cadence to give a religious context to the final section.’
This piece packs in numerous compositional techniques yet is interesting and rewarding for performer and audience alike. The themes of passage of time, a journey, and using modern genres and themes lend the piece it’s title – ‘Bach to the Future’
