A progressive series of carefully written ensemble pieces from Colin Dowdeswell for Violin, Viola, Cell and Double Bass with piano accompaniment, Book One is entirely played on Open Strings.
The ‘Fingers and Bows’ series was born of a deep conviction that making music together is vital to developing the joy which making music brings.
Book 1: Open Strings consists of 6 pieces for Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass with piano accompaniment. All the parts are played on Open strings , and are therefore ideal for early ensemble playing.
There are also five piano link passages, so that the pieces can be played in combination to allow musical directors the flexibility to play up to six pieces consecutively to suit the capabilities of their players and the demands of a musical program.Later books in the series develop the level of challenge as players master more fingers and positions.
Taking up a bowed string instrument is challenge enough, but as any teacher will know, retaining and fuelling that initial enthusiasm can be an even greater challenge. As with sport, the sooner players can be involved in group activity, the quicker they will come to understand the enjoyment that such sociability brings. This group of pieces, tailored for string players who have mastered open strings, will help to open their eyes to the joy of making music with others.
