This piece uses some of the principles of minimalist composition as its foundation, interspersed with contrasting stylistic features from Baroque to jazz! In the A sections I have used the idea of ‘phase shifting a short Riff into an accompaniment feature which acts as the repetitive framework of the piece, which is decorated by jazz style solos incorporating an improvisatory feel. The B section contrasts in tempo and style and uses the other minimalist principles of augmentation and repetition to build an interesting and stimulating musical contrast, before returning to the original themes to conclude the work. There are very few works like this one for Concert/Wind band and in all my years of playing in and conducting Wind Bands, I have never come across one like it!I hope you enjoy the experience.
