I have turned my hand to produce solo items for budding young soloists and this example is one of my favourite creations for Solo Flute and Wind/Concert band.
I have tried to create a flute solo that sounds symphonic and expressive, yet is not terribly challenging technically, but is very rewarding melodically for both player and audience.
It opens with a held chord before the solo flute enters with an opening melody which builds and crescendos until accompanied by wood wind playing held chords. A very satisfying counter melody is added and developed with flute decoration, which leads into the main theme of the work. This has a very Pop style feel with some pleasant modulations.
I am particularly pleased with the closing section of this composition which came to me during the early hours of the morning whilst holidaying in the Pyrenees. I had an idea how to conclude the work and was further motivated by the fantastic sunrise over the mountains as I was working.
The conclusion of the work revisits an earlier melody which just had to finish in a major key after such a wonderful uplifting experience. Chris Ellis
