The music in this project is a development of some simple guitar tunes which were influenced by folk and baroque music. For the most part they should be played with a lot of raw energy; initially I was tempted by the idea of writing this for a crumhorn consort, but was persuaded to choose a standard wind quintet instead.
The project took two years from initial concept to fully develop, and despite having the benefit of some invaluable advice from composers and musicians who have been able to bring a huge amount of talent and experience to the music, it has been a solo journey consisting of many hours of listening and imagining, trying out harmonies, motifs, rhythmical variations and so on, like adding layers to a painting; however with the advantage of being able to take away layers when there’s too much texture.
I hope I’ve distilled a music that has a lot to listen to in terms of harmony and rhythm while retaining the simplicity of the original melodies. Dave
