The Wayfarer is mysterious and exciting. His journey takes him to strange lands and far off places. Smell the scent of the exotic on the wind.
‘I wrote this piece for a very talented young trumpet player from my school who subsequently left to go to University. It has quite an enigmatic charm to its melody and style, yet it is quite modern in the treatment of this melodic material!I wanted to create an interesting and challenging piece that was fun to play and would be interesting for the audience. As a trumpet player with a very good working knowledge of the instrument, understanding that the melodies and choice of key is so important for the young brass player, I experimented over some weeks to find good resonant open keys and melodies for the piece. The piece opens and concludes with a solo trumpet introducing the minor melody, backed up occasionally with chordal accompaniment. The main theme is reworked throughout, making it mono thematic, yet the movement between the various stylistic variations keeps the piece interesting and challenging for the performers, yet exciting and rewarding for the audience.’ Chris Ellis
